Keeping Resolutions
Question: Every year I set goals and make resolutions, but after a few weeks I find it hard to stay with them. What am I doing wrong?
Answer: Setting goals can be a great way to help you focus your energy and move you towards a definable result. Sometimes people set goals that they think are the “right” goals, the ones that are the “should” goals. These often are not the goals you feel passionate about.
Another way to think about setting goals could be to base them on your personal values. What would you really want to strive for if you knew you absolutely could achieve it? (Don't be afraid to “dream large.”) Focus on the outcome you want; the steps to reach it will become clear.
Make a list of “big dreams.” Does it surprise you to see what you put on that list? Begin to imagine achieving those things. Notice how it makes you feel. Pick one thing on that list and for a month jot down any idea you think of that might help you attain that dream. Have fun with it!
