Morale
Question: I have been asked to work on a morale committee at work. I am not quite sure what morale is and how to improve it. Any suggestions?
Answer: Many companies are realizing that there is a connection between people’s attitudes at work and their productivity. Morale committees are just one way to try to make sure that people feel acknowledged and appreciated. It makes for a more pleasant environment.
Most people feel good when they receive genuine recognition for a job well done. And it is often a good morale booster to plan certain events to break up the routine. It is easy to combine both of these things. Here are some suggestions. For a smaller company, have a potluck luncheon once a quarter for everyone, have the supervisor trade places with some of the people s/he supervises, have a crazy hat day. For larger companies, rent out a small local movie theater and have everyone bussed to it to watch a movie together or have an indoor picnic with everyone contributing.
Whatever the event, it is important for the head of the company to participate and to make comments about the success and good work of each individual. If the company is too large to mention everyone at one time, then keep a list and make sure that at each event new people are recognized until everyone has been publicly acknowledged.
People need to feel that their efforts are noticed. It helps people feel connected to the company and the other people there.
