Our Beliefs about Ourselves

January 2005 - Happy New Year to everyone!

As is often the custom, the New Year brings with it a desire to set new goals for yourself. One of the most important factors in determining how successful you will be in achieving your goals is what your beliefs are about yourself. Many times we are unaware of some of our beliefs that actually get in the way of our finding the success we seek. This is a good time to reflect on whether any of the following three beliefs might be affecting you.

The first of these are called “fatal beliefs.” These are the “I can’t, I’m not capable” beliefs. These are the beliefs that set limitations for ourselves. Next there are the “blocker beliefs.” These are beliefs about others, such as “my boss won’t ever listen to me.” These beliefs tend to build walls between us and others. The third beliefs are called “survival beliefs” and these are the ones based around our insecurities and fear: “always look after number 1”, “get what you can while you can.” These beliefs keep us stuck in fear and anxiety.

We can choose what beliefs we live by. We can change old beliefs that no longer apply. Perhaps this is a good time to examine what beliefs control how you face life’s challenges and “sweep out” the ones that are no longer useful and replace them with ones that help you focus on where you want to go in this coming year.
